You could easily get away with using a smaller Roland keyboard through the laptop.

portable keyboard, but with the capacity to make outrageous midi setups with tons of parameters, almost as much as a Korg workstation.

It is very light too, so its easy to haul and just plug in and go! Also, though the Kurzweil would work, you could probably even get a smaller keyboard controller if you are to hook it up to your laptop.the Kurzweil is nearly a workstation itself (I have a PC-88, the line right before yours) and I believe it is one of the greatest keyboards EVER because of its versatility, making it a great piano/strings/etc. It also comes with a Clav and Wurli emulator, so its pretty versatile, though probably not as realistic as the laptop style samples.

The nord has a very decent Rhodes patch (actually two) and has a built in digital effects, such as Wah, Auto Wah, Ring Mod, and some others. I was disappointed with the Hammond Sound on it, but I have a Roland VK-8 which is in my mind the best bang-for-buck Hammond B-3 emulator. I've also played on a Nord Electro II before, and its actually pretty good. I wouldn't suggest getting it unless you are looking to record as well as do live gigs.

If you get full blown logic, it is very expensive, plus, from what I"ve heard, it takes a very long time to be able to learn to use all the plug-ins and nuances of the program so it will definitely be a learning curve and not just plug and play. Also, check out the post in General Discusion called "Uri Caine." Uri, a very famous rhodes guy almost exclusively uses the samples from Logic, apple's do-it-all recording software. I've heard very good things about Scarbee.they have probably the largest expression range of any samples, according to reviews. if you have a great sample library on your comp, putting it trhough pedals would be kind of an odd choice when many of the programs come with digital effects) If you are looking to funkify the rhodes sound, there is truly nothing like the analog keyboard through analog effects (i have a ring modulator which is an extremely versatile effect! and a RAT2 distortion pedal which gives my tube amp an extra boost.) In my mind its worth the pain (physical and mental) of owning a Rhodes, but we all should concede that sometimes, sampling is necessary. Just so you know, if you are already going digital, you should just use digital effects, in my mind. You are definitely looking at all the right stuff. soft-synths, and think that I should get a Nord or Nord Rack and some effects pedals etc.

I would like to continue doing that, but apart from that I'm not really that keen to get into full-on professional recording and sequencing etc.Ĭan anybody tell me how I go about acheiving this what I should buy how I should set it all up, etc? Or could you point me in the direction or a resource which would explain all this to someone who hasn't got much of a clue? Also, if you think I am heading in the wrong direction re. At the moment I do a little bit of MIDI sequencing on my home computer using the PC2x just for the purposes of seeing how things sound before I take them in to real musicians I don't record audio or anything because my computer is pretty old and not very fast. Pretty much all I would want to do is play the Scarbee samples live using my controller keyboard (Kurzweil PC2x) and experiment with different effects on the computer. I also read about something called Receptor, which sounds pretty cool, but I don't fully understand it or know if it would be useful to me. If I did that then I would probably buy the Scarbee Vintage Keyboard FX plugin as well.

So at the moment, I am leaning towards buying a laptop and the Scarbee sample library. I have also heard that the new Nord Stage has great Rhodes sounds. I also read that the MrRay Seventy Three V. sample library contains sounds which are the closest you can get by far to a real rhodes. I read on the Rhodes Supersite that the Scarbee R. The new setup would be used almost exclusively for live gigs. But I also want to start getting into effects so that I can get some new and interesting sounds (I have never used effects on my Rhodes apart from a bit of overdrive on my Peavey Classic 30 guitar amp). I want to get as close to the sound of a real Rhodes as I can. It is great, but its inconvenience, continual need for mainentance and occasional unreliability have caused me to consider a rhodes emulation. I have a Rhodes Mk II Stage 73 electric piano.
